Please make note that Miss Brown often teaches TWO LEVELS of English 11 classes.  Be sure to select the correct level that you need access to.

ENGLISH 11
GENERAL LEVEL

GENERAL LEVEL ENGLISH CLASSES ARE DESIGNED FOR STUDENTS WHO PLAN TO ATTEND COLLEGE, WORK AFTER GRADUATION, OR PURSUE OTHER PROFESSIONAL CAREERS.

 

Course Description

(Prerequisite:  Passing grade in English 10):  This course is designed for students who plan to attend a technical school, enter the world of work, or attend college upon graduation.  It includes a chronological study of American literature selections, novels, and essays.  A variety of papers will be written with an emphasis on the persuasive paper.  An extensive career unit covering career exploration, resumes, and job applications is included.

 

We will be working on grammar skills often grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, reading for content, etc.).  We will also do D-O-Ls on a regular basis.   We will be writing response-based journals weekly usually geared around a specific literature or career-oriented question.

 

 

Expectations For a General Level Class

Ø      Some reading will be completed at home/some will be done in the classroom.

Ø      Read complete works of literature by chapters, emphasis on comprehension of details.

Ø      Topics for writing will be assigned.  Occasionally, students will be given options.

Ø      Learn to make some changes from draft version to final copy.

Ø      Grammar and composition skills will be focused.

Ø      Papers lengths vary from 1 3 pages.

Ø      Oral presentations and group projects.

Ø      Homework on some nights.  Usually students are given multiple nights to complete.

Ø      Most papers must be typed to specification teacher will specify each assignment.

COLLEGE PREP LEVEL

COLLEGE PREP LEVEL ENGLISH CLASSES ARE DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR STUDENTS WHO PLAN TO PURSUE HIGHER LEVELS OF EDUCATION AFTER GRADUATION AND/OR PURSUE A PROFESSIONAL CAREER.

Course Description

(Prerequisite C average or above in CP English 10) This course is designed for students who plan to attend college.  Students will critically read a variety of American literature selections, both classic and contemporary and will actively participate in class discussion.  They will study literary periods, authors backgrounds, and styles of writing.  They will analyze the elements of literature and write a variety of papers with an emphasis on the persuasive paper.  A research paper is a requirement for this course.  An extensive career unit covering career exploration, resumes, and job applications is also included.

 

We will be working on grammar skills often grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, reading for content, etc.).  We will also do D-O-Ls on a regular basis.   We will be writing response-based journals weekly usually geared around a specific literature or career-oriented question.

Ø      Majority of reading will be completed at home.

Ø      Read complete works of literature.

Ø      Topics for writing will be assigned, but often give student many options.

Ø      Learn to make major changes from draft version to final copy.

Ø      Grammar and composition skills will be focused.

Ø      Papers Three pages is usually a minimum length.

Ø      Oral presentations and group projects.

Ø      Homework on most nights approximately 30+ minutes.

Ø      All papers must be typed to specification.

ENGLISH 11 - COLLEGE PREP LEVEL COURSE SYLLABUS

Please note that students are not required to be in a specific level of coursework.  Each year, teachers give each student a referral, which is then passed on to the guidance department.  If you have any questions about this matter, please contact the guidance office at Ravenna High School at (330) 296-3844 X 3003.
